Jon Karlen is Learning How to Samba

I'm happy to report that Jon Karlen, Open English board member and partner at Flybridge Capital Partners, recently moved to Sao Paulo with his family for three months to deep-dive into the local start-up ecosystem. Together with the move, he started blogging about his experiences as an American venture capitalist in Brazil. It was fun for me to read his first post and see how Open English influenced his view on Latin America's potential. Looking forward to following his adventures!

Three New Directors Join our Product Team

Just got back from lunch with our three new product directors and I'm more excited than ever about the improvements they are dreaming up for the upcoming version of our learning platform.

Nicole Wilson, a PhD in Cognitive Psychology (Psycholinguistics) from the University of California, joins us from Pearson Knowledge Technologies and will carry the title of Academic Director at Open English. She's focused on applied psycholinguists with an expertise in language assessment, first- and second- language acquisition, bilingualism, and the relationship between language, thought, and action. (Try to say that 3 times quickly!)

To her right is James Daley, our new Director of Product. James comes to us after years of experience at Motorola and more recently as the CTO of a start-up in the adventure/travel segment. He's got a proven track record in operational and program management, as well as software development and IT operations.

To Nicole's left is Seth Travis who joins Open English as our Creative Director. Seth has been a brand ambassador, creative director, and key contributor to high performing marketing teams across diverse industries and functions; including GE's commercial leadership team and more recently as the E-Commerce and Brand Manager for RalphLauren.com

As you can see in the below picture, they are already deep in thought! ;)

On Changes, Respect and Understanding

Those of you who know Open English know us for the irreverent humor of our ads and our firm belief in the power of online technology and native English speakers as teachers. One of our humorous fictional characters unfortunately struck a nerve with certain groups, including an important teachers’ association, in Brazil.

Because we feel nothing but mutual respect and admiration for our colleagues in education, we talked things out, took their criticisms to heart and will be making some changes.  This video conveys our message to these hard-working educators. Part of learning and communicating effectively – an essential part of our mission with our more than 40,000 students – is receiving feedback and adjusting the message, so we’re doing just that!

------
